Issues/Pain or Opportunity: General Manager of organisation had overseen a period of significant growth and success.  The Senior Management team need to develop a more formal framework for evaluating performance and staff competencies to develop themselves and the organisation as a whole.  Aspiring managers need to be identified and developed and Senior Managers need to see their role as leaders as well as technical experts.

Reasons:  The rapid growth of the organisation created a large team and a series of work areas with different managers.  The General Manager was responsible for developing HR systems that would manage performance and staff development while engaging the workforce and creating an ‘employer of choice’ environment

Capabilities needed: A combination of consulting and management development with expertise in customising performance systems and training staff in their usage.

We provided: A series of Senior Management workshops in the areas of performance management and leadership development.  One on one consulting with the General Manager to support the development of a customised performance review and staff development program based around core and position competencies/behaviours.  A series of Senior Management sessions to workshop the draft systems and position competencies.  A review of the draft PRDP program and a launch approach that allowed for initial short term goal setting prior to an annual review meeting.  The development of an Aspiring Manager program to support new and existing team leaders in a variety of departments and facilitated workshops to train these managers.

Result: Effective customisation and ‘buy-in’ of the Senior Management team to both the tools and process of creating a high performance work culture.  An effective launch of their “Moving Forward” program with a 90 day practice run in advance of their first annual goal setting.  The identification of Aspiring Managers and the implementation of their development program.  Cultural change led top-down by GM while ‘taking the team along.
